The Rear Drive Module (RDM) on your AWD CG1 Captiva drives the electromagnetic clutch that engages the rear differential when AWD is needed. Without the RDM working, the car defaults to FWD only and the AWD warning will light on the cluster. When the RDM is replaced, the new unit needs to be security linked to your VIN and loaded with the correct factory calibrations before AWD will engage.
All programming is done in the vehicle via OBD-II using OBDSync on a Windows laptop — no need to remove or ship the RDM.
