The Engine Control Module (ECM) in your RG Colorado is the main brain for the 2.5L or 2.8L Duramax turbo diesel engine — controlling fuel injection, turbo boost, EGR, DPF regeneration and the immobiliser handshake. When the ECM is replaced (after a known fault or a swap from a wrecker), the new unit needs to be security linked to your VIN and loaded with the correct factory calibrations before the truck will start and run correctly.
All programming is done in the vehicle via OBD-II using OBDSync on a Windows laptop — no need to remove or ship the ECM.
